#4 2D No Moment Table

The idea for the 2D No Moment Table began as a question: what would a piece of furniture look like if it were designed around the absence of moment? Instead of resisting force, the structure would allow it — but only in a single, intentional direction. This constraint became the aesthetic. The table was built in 2023 at Henscratch Woodworks Studio in Lincoln, MA by Frank and Dugan Maddux. The build process focused on precision shaping of the flexible leg strips, testing their deflection, and tuning the tabletop’s travel so the motion felt smooth and deliberate. The final form is minimal, almost quiet, but the underlying mechanics give it a sense of life. When touched, the table responds — not dramatically, but perceptibly — reminding the user that structure and movement are not opposites.
