Designed as both a bedside table and a personal library, Evy's Story Orb Bookshelf was created for our granddaughter, Evy, to keep favorite books close at hand while adding an element of discovery to the reading experience. Crafted entirely from black walnut, the piece combines traditional woodworking with a playful mechanical design.
At its center is a three-shelf rotating orb supported by a central spindle and guided by bearings concealed within the outer base. Books are organized on the rotating interior shelves, allowing a larger collection to be stored within a compact footprint.
A hand-shaped walnut lever on the top surface engages a set of handmade wooden gears hidden beneath the tabletop. Turning the lever rotates the orb, bringing different books into view and transforming the simple act of choosing a story into an interactive experience.
Every component, from the curved outer frame to the gears, spindle, and shelves, was designed and crafted specifically for this project. The result is a functional piece of furniture that celebrates craftsmanship, imagination, and a lifelong love of reading.
