#3 Reclaimed Chestnut Dining Table

The Reclaimed Chestnut Dining Table is the third work in the Design 100 Project, a curated series exploring the intersection of functional furniture and conceptual design. Created in 2024 by Henscratch Woodworks, this piece reflects an ongoing study of material history, narrative preservation, and the integration of organic and modern design elements. Crafted from chestnut reclaimed from a 1750s log cabin in Hardy, Virginia, the table carries forward the physical and cultural legacy of early American craftsmanship. The surface is reimagined through intricate epoxy inlays depicting flowers, butterflies, and plant forms—embedding natural motifs within the lived history of the wood to manage the age-related defects in the wood. These elements create a dialogue between past and present, permanence and transformation. Structurally, the table features a floating breadboard ends and pegged leg joinery, showcasing traditional woodworking techniques while allowing for seasonal wood movement and long-term durability. The result is both technically refined and visually grounded. Designed as a dining table, the piece serves as a central gathering space where heritage and contemporary living intersect. Its rustic origins are preserved while its execution allows it to exist comfortably within a modern home. As part of a limited 1 of 1 edition, this work is individually documented, serialized, and preserved within the Design 100 archive. Its metadata and associated digital record establish authenticity, authorship, and placement within the broader collection.
