In 2009 Dr. Dugan Maddux traveled to Rome, GA to visit dialysis patient, George Harper, and his wife, Irene. George’s story includes his personal account of familial renal disease that claimed the life of his two older brothers; Billy at age 15 in 1946 and Tommy at age 22 in 1960 after a failed renal transplant at the Brigham. George’s personal history includes his love and friendship with renal patient and nephrologist, Dr. Peter Lundin. As a long-time home dialysis patient and now renal transplant patient, George, supported by Irene, has been an active patient advocate and mentor.
