Design 100 Project FAQs

The Design 100 Project is a commitment by Frank and Dugan Maddux to design and produce a series of one hundred unique works created by Henscratch Studios.

A Design 100 Work may be:

  • a single physical object, or
  • a series or set of multiple physical objects that together form one conceptual work.

Each Work is paired with a digital token on the Base Network blockchain that serves as its permanent record of authenticity and provenance.

Every Design 100 Work is initially gifted by HenScratch Studios to its first collector.

This first transfer:

  • establishes the initial steward
  • creates a clean starting point for provenance
  • does not trigger any payment or royalty as it is a gift to the collector
  • The transfer of the Work to a collector follows the rules of the Design 100 Project Master Contract that maintains the provenance on the Base Network.

Some Works — such as sculptural sets, furniture series, or conceptual studies — may include multiple physical objects that together form a single artistic idea.

In these cases:

  • One token represents the entire series
  • All physical objects should stay together
  • Ownership as a collector cannot be split or separated
  • Any future transfer must include the entire set

This preserves the integrity of the Work as a unified creative statement.

The digital token is a secure, Base Network blockchain‑based certificate that proves who owns the Work. It stores:

  • the Work’s story and ethos
  • materials and dimensions
  • build documentation
  • ownership history
  • details for each component if the object is a series

The digital token may be through of as a permanent passport that follows with the Work’s ownership.

The Base Network Blockchain provides:

  • Permanence — records cannot be lost or altered
  • Transparency — ownership is always clear
  • Security — provenance is protected
  • Longevity — the Work’s story outlives any single platform

It ensures the history of each Design 100 Work remains intact for generations.

No. Henscratch Studios will provide you with a digital wallet to hold your token and guide you through any setup. The Studio will provide a Provenance Document in addition to the Digital Token. Managing your digital wallet will be made simple for a collector.

Any transfer after the initial gift must include:

  • the digital token
  • all physical objects associated with the Work

The blockchain:

  • records the transfer
  • updates the ownership history
  • ensures the provenance remains intact

Henscratch Studios will assist with any blockchain interaction if the Work is gifted or sold. If the transfer involves a sale with payment, then the Design 100 Project Master Contract dictated a 7% royalty that applies to the Henscratch Studios wallet.

A 7% royalty is paid to the  Henscratch Studios digital wallet only on secondary sales — meaning any sale after the initial gift.

This royalty:

  • is automatically handled by the Base Network blockchain and is governed by the Design 100 Project Master Contract
  • supports the studio’s long‑term creative and archival work
  • applies to the sale of the entire Work (including all objects in a series)

There is no royalty on the initial or future gift transfers.

You may:

  • display the Work anywhere you choose
  • photograph it
  • sell or gift it (with the token)
  • enjoy it as a functional or sculptural object

You do not receive rights to reproduce the design or create derivative works. All creative rights remain with HenScratch Studios.

If any object within a multi‑object Work is:

  • restored
  • materially altered
  • damaged
  • lost

The provenance record can be updated on the Base Network Blockchain to reflect its evolving story. This will help maintain transparency for future collectors and stewards.

The blockchain token is the sole proof of ownership. If you lose access to the digital wallet, the studio cannot replace the token.

It is recommended:

  • backing up the wallet
  • storing the wallet recovery phrase securely

Henscratch Studios will assist.

Provenance is stored in two places:

  1. On the Base Network blockchain — ownership, authenticity, and key metadata
  2. In decentralized storage known as the IPFS or InterPlanetary File System. In these storage locations are detailed documentation, photography, and narrative about each Work.

Yes. Each Design 100 Work has a public page on the HenScratch Studios website that includes:

  • its story
  • materials
  • process documentation
  • details for each object (if it’s a series)

At Henscratch Studios we believe that handmade objects which are one of a kind — especially conceptual works — deserve a clear, enduring record of their creation, ownership and journey. The Design 100 Project blends traditional craftsmanship with modern stewardship, ensuring each Work’s story is preserved long after it leaves the studio. This project represents one of the first digital provenance undertakings in the craft and maker movement.
